Franco Regalzi

I am not 100% sure but I think Alberto, my first ever Italian student, introduced me to Franco in 1987. Franco was then teaching kickboxing in Bodyline Gym in Tortona. He gave up kickboxing to become my student. He came to the Basement in London once to train for about a week. The rest of the time it was I who went to Tortona to conduct workshops with Franco and his students. I remember those days when we were unable to cover the costs of my trips there.

I would go to Tortona to teach Franco and leave him with enough work to study by himself till we could see each other again. I was enthusiastic to have an Italian representative and he was very keen to learn from me. We continued to work in this way for the years that followed. Other Italians found out about me and slowly an Italian following was formed with people from different parts of Italy. With the help of Franco and Dario from Valdobbiadene we even organized a seminar for my sifu Wong Shun Leung in Milan. The enthusiasm between us all was very strong . We wanted to spread the practice of Wing Chun all over Italy. The future looked bright!

I moved to Valdobbiadene in 1993 and in a space of a few months found an apartment in Conegliano. I was running classes in Mestre and in Conegliano . I lived in Italy for almost two years and during that time in Italy I saw less of Franco than when I lived in London. I moved back to London in 1995 and returned to teaching at my old school, The Basement. Franco started organizing seminars for me in Tortona again. This was mainly so we could meet and he could study more with me. This continued for the following years though the training between myself and Franco started to slacken. By the late 90s we didnt train. Franco would invite me to do a seminar and that was it. By the time I moved to Ibiza there was no more studying with me. Franco's enthusiasm was focused elsewhere. I kept asking him to come to Ibiza to do some studying together and revise what he had learnt so far but he didn't take up the offer.

This year he surprised me by turning up on the second half of the last day of a week long seminar here in Ibiza. I still don't know why he came. He did not participate and when prompted he reluctantly joined in. I noticed that on his website he mentioned a letter of introduction that I had written for him so that he could travel to Hong Kong and train at my sifu's school. I have not written any such letter and to my knowledge he has never been to Hong Kong. He has not finished the study of the Wong Shun Leung nor the Nino Bernardo Wing Chun system.

I was in Tortona on the 29th November this year(2009) to do a seminar organized by Sandro and Davide. Franco was supposed to organize this; in fact, it was he who suggested this seminar. Franco informed me that after having contacted every single one of his students, only 5 could make it. Unbeknown to him, Davide and Sandro telephoned everybody and informed them of this seminar, over 30 people attended.

At the seminar, I confronted Franco about his trip to Hong Kong. He said that he went to HK in 1988(we met in 1987) but could not remember the name of the airport nor my sifu?s address nor the names of any of the people with whom he was supposed to have trained. I could not continue questioning him because this had become far too embarrassing for everybody. Due to Franco Regalzi's dishonesty, it is with a sad heart that I announce that he is no longer my representative in Italy. I started an Italian kung fu family with him more than 20 years ago. Many of the members of that family are now dispersed all over Italy. I hope to contact as many of these members as possible in the hope of reuniting all those who wish to join me in training and spreading the practice of Wing Chun in Italy.

Non sono sicuro al 100% ma credo che è stato Alberto, il mio primo allievo italiano, a presentarmi a Franco nel 1987. All'epoca Franco insegnava kickboxing nella palestra Bodyline Gym a Tortona. Lui ha abbandonato kickboxing per diventare mio allievo. E venuto al Basement di Londra una volta e si è allenato per una settimana. Per il resto del tempo sono sempre stato io a venire a Tortona per condurre diversi workshop con Franco ed i suoi allievi. Ricordo anche i giorni quando non riuscivamo nemmeno a coprire le spese dei miei viaggi là.

Io dovevo andare a Tortona per insegnare a Franco e lasciarlo con un sufficiente bagaglio di lavoro da poter allenarsi da solo prima di poter incontrarci di nuovo. Ero entusiasta di avere un rappresentante italiano e lui era molto volentieroso nel imparare da me. Abbiamo continuato a lavorare in questo modo per gli anni seguenti. Nel frattempo altri italiani mi hanno scoperto e pian piano mi ha seguito un gruppo formato da persone provenienti da diverse parti d'Italia. Con l'aiuto di Franco e Dario di Valdobbiadene abbiamo anche organizzato un seminario di mio sifu Wong Shun Leung a Milano. C'era un forte entusiasmo tra tutti noi. Volevamo diffondere la pratica di Wing Chun in tutta l'Italia. Il futuro sembrava brillante! Mi sono trasferito a Valdobbiadene nel 1993 e nel giro di pochi mesi ho trovato un appartamento a Conegliano. Ho guidato allenamenti a Mestre e a Conegliano. Ho vissuto in Italia per quasi due anni e durante questo tempo trascorso in Italia ho visto Franco sempre meno di quando abitavo a Londra.

Mi sono trasferito di nuovo a Londra nel 1995 e sono ritornato ad insegnare nella mia vecchia scuola, The Basement. Franco ha cominciato di nuovo ad organizzare i seminari per me a Tortona. Per questo motivo abbiamo potuto incontrarci di nuovo e lui ha potuto imparare di più con me. Abbiamo continuato in questo modo per alcuni anni affinche gli allenamenti tra me e Franco hanno cominciato a diminuire. Alla fine degli anni 90 non ci siamo più allenati insieme. Franco mi invitava a fare qualche seminario e finiva lì. Al momento che mi sono trasferito in Ibiza lui non si allenava più con me. L'entusiasmo di Franco era concentrato altrove. Ho continuato a chiedergli di venire in Ibiza per fare qualche allenamento insieme e ripassare quello che aveva imparato tempo fa ma lui non ha accettato l'offerta.

Quest'anno mi ha sorpreso con la sua apparizione nella seconda parte dell'ultimo giorno del seminario durato una settimana qui in Ibiza. Non lo so ancora perchè è venuto. Non ha partecipato e quando veniva sollecitato si univa malvolentieri. Ho notato che sul suo sito web ha menzionato una lettera di presentazione che io avrei scritto per lui così lui poteva andare a Hong Kong e allenarsi nella scuola del mio sifu. Non ho mai scritto una tale lettera e per quanto ne so io lui non è mai stato ad Hong Kong. Non ha mai finito il sistema di Wing Chun nè di Wong Shun Leung nè quello di Nino Bernardo.

Il 29 novembre di quest'anno (2009) sono stato a Trotona per fare un seminario organizzato da Sandro e Davide. Si intendeva che era Franco a dover organizzare questo seminario in quanto è stato lui a proporlo. Franco mi ha informato che dopo aver contattato ogni singolo suo allievo solo 5 di loro potevano venire. A sua insaputa Sandro e Davide hanno telefonato a tutti e hanno informato loro del seminario ed erano più di 30 a venire.

Al seminario ho affrontato Franco con la domanda del suo viaggio a Hong Kong. Lui mi ha detto che è andato a Hong Kong nel 1988 (noi ci siamo conosciuti nel '87) ma non si ricordava nè il nome dell'aeroporto nè l'indirizzo del mio sifu nè i nomi delle persone con quale avrebbe dovuto allenarsi. Non ho potuto continuare ad interrogarlo perchè cominciava ad essere troppo imbarazzante per tutti. A causa della disonestà di Franco, e con il cuore triste che io annuncio che lui non è più il mio rappresentante in Italia. Ho fondato con lui la mia famiglia italiana di kung fu più di vent'anni fa. Adesso ci sono molti membri di questa famiglia sparsi in tutta l'Italia. Spero di contattare più di questi membri possibili nella speranza di riunire tutti coloro che desiderano di unirsi a me nell'allenamento e diffondere la pratica di Wing Chun in Italia.

Shame and Scandal in the family

There is the saying, 'Never wash your dirty linen in public'. It was exactly this that gave Franco the space to do whatever he did. My mistake was to stay quiet not wanting to cause the classical bruta figura. The only way to clear the air was to put everything out in the open. Too many students would otherwise be kept in the dark. Indeed, those who noticed changes were too embarrassed to say anything to each other, let alone tell me. I had to make a decision. I had to confront Franco in front of as many witnesses as possible. I had spoken to him in private and given him enough opportunities to come clean but to no avail. Franco is a very talented person indeed. He has spent most of his life training very hard. He has all the attributes of a very high caliber martial artist. He did not need to lie. Over the years he has become a well known in Italy. He has chosen a path in life that I cannot agree with. I have no objection to anyone who wishes to continue to follow Franco. For those who chose not to do so, I would like to offer them the chance to learn from myself personally.

VERGOGNA E SCANDALO IN FAMIGLIA

C'è un detto: Non lavare i tuoi panni sporchi in pubblico. Ed è stato proprio questo a permettere a Franco di fare quello che ha fatto. Il mio sbaglio è stato di starmene zitto perché non volevo causare a nessuno la classica brutta figura. L'unico modo per chiarire la situazione era mettere tutto allo scoperto. Altrimenti troppi allievi sarebbero stati tenuti all'oscuro. Invece quelli che se ne sono accorti dei cambiamenti erano troppo in imbarazzo per parlare tra loro o per dirmelo a me. Dovevo prendere la decisione. Ho dovuto affrontare Franco davanti a più testimoni possibili. Ho parlato con lui anche in privato e ho dato a lui tante opportunità di venire fuori pulito da questa storia, ma senza successo. Franco è una persona con molto talento. Ha passato la maggior parte della sua vita allenandosi molto duramente. Lui ha tutte le caratteristiche di un praticante di arti marziali di altissimo calibro. Non aveva alcun bisogno di dire le bugie. In tutti questi anni è diventato già molto conosciuto in Italia. Lui ha scelto la strada nella vita che non posso condividere. Non ho niente contro chi desidera continuare di seguire Franco. A quelli che hanno scelto invece di non farlo mi piacerebbe di offrire la possibilità di imparare personalmente da me.
